When deploying Microsoft SQL Server on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), you have several licensing options. Let’s explore them:
Oracle Cloud Marketplace Image:
You can use a pre-configured **Marketplace image** for Microsoft SQL Server on OCI. These images are published by Oracle and Oracle Partners. By selecting an appropriate image, you can quickly set up SQL Server on reliable and secure OCI Compute instances.
This option simplifies deployment and provides a ready-to-use environment.
- Bring Your Own License (BYOL):
If you already have a valid SQL Server license, you can bring it to OCI. This is known as License Mobility through Software Assurance.
With License Mobility, you can deploy eligible application servers (including SQL Server) on OCI’s bare metal hosts or virtual shared hardware. This flexibility allows you to leverage your existing licenses while benefiting from OCI’s features.
For example, if you have SQL Server licenses covered by Software Assurance, you can use them on OCI without additional licensing costs.
Self-Managed SQL Server:
If you prefer full control over your SQL Server environment, you can choose to run it as a **self-managed** instance on OCI.
In this scenario, you set up the infrastructure and database environment yourself. You have complete control over the operating system, database software, patches, data replication, backup, and restoration.
Running SQL Server on OCI Compute instances allows you to optimize performance, scalability, and cost according to your specific needs.
