Azure SSO without @Domain?

I remember seeing somewhere that Microsoft is moving to allowing a feature in which the domain (@ecasd.us) is no longer necessary and users only need their PrincipalUserName (username). Anyone have a read on this and it's release?

    The @domain portion is part of the userPrincipalName attribute
