It Is correct that the issue is related to Adobe Acrobat.
Due to bogus windows updates I had to make an in situe upgrade.
After this I no longer can embed a PDF file in a word document.
I can in the settings see that the addin "Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM Addin" has gone missing.
How do I replace it?

As others have said, usually that error message indicates that Adobe Acrobat isn't properly installed.

Are you able to open PDFs on your system in Adobe, or do they open in your default web browser instead?

I have tried both to repair the office installation and reinstall the Adobe Acrobat but neither of the attempts worked.
PDF files opens fine in Adobe Acrobat and I can create PDF files in Adobe Acrobat as well, so nothing indicates that there should be an issue with Adobe Acrobat.
In Word i can save files as PDF but I am not able to embed a PDF file in a word document.

Sorry, I should have clarified that I was referring to double-clicking PDF icons. Do PDFs open in Adobe when you do that? If the default application for PDFs is set to your browser, then Word won't recognize the Adobe PDF object.

And I should have been more clear in my answer, but YES Adobe is the default handler for PDF files and PDF files do open in Acrobat when i double-click on a PDF file.

Klaus, thanks for the clarification. I suppose you could check if your installation is 32 bit or 64 bit, as suggested earlier, but I doubt that is the issue.

Klaus, thanks for the clarification. I suppose you could check if your installation is 32 bit or 64 bit, as suggested earlier, but I doubt that is the issue.

Sorry but the solution does not work for me :(
When trying to add the "PDFMaker.OfficeAddin" in the COM-addin window I get a message saying "[Acrobat-installationpath]\PDFMaker\Office\PDFMOfficeAddIn.dll is not a valid Office-addin. I am then stuck.

It is recommended that you see if it is related to the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Office, and you can try to install another version of Office products, and then test it.

I only have 1 Office licens so it is not that i have multiple options.
MS-Office and Adobe Acrobat worked fine together before I had to do the "In-place Upgrade" of Windows. So I don't think the issue is related to whether it 32bit or 64bit.
I am more convinced that some bogus information have been added to the windows registry which disabled the linkage.
