Delete permissions affecting MS Office files

Question

Hello. I've been doing some research regarding to this concern and I am aware of a some limitations regarding delete permissions for files which wont allow MS office files to be edited. Due to the way MS office handles tmp files during the saving process, if you remove delete permissions from any files, you wont be able to edit/save them, even if you have write/modify rights.

I need yo know if there is any workaround in order to avoid users to delete files and folders, but still allow them to modify (mainly) XLS files. Since the articles I read were dated a few years ago, I was wondering if there are any updates that address this issue.
