When replacing/refreshing your company PCs how do you secure user data and settings?

Yes we do use OneDrive and that does take care of user data
that is, when it remembers to synch… Which there is no way centrally to thoroughly check!

Users are much more concerned, after the refresh!! about their missing Desktop layout, document shortcuts, links to recently opened files, browser favorites and cached passwords.

  • Again yes we do encourage users to sync browser data but…

So - How do you migrate user data from the old PC to the new and worse, stash data somewhere while reinstalling? Or is the answer “Don’t bother. Let the user handle it himself” ?

    Consider using https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/sync-health?tabs=windows

You can also control OneDrive sync behavior with Intune and Group Policies: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/use-group-policy

    Hi XYjacobsson,

Thanks for your post. To find Sync settings, select Start , then select Settings > Accounts > Sync your settings .

Choose from settings such as language preferences, passwords, and color themes. If you turn on Other Windows settings, Windows also syncs some device settings (for things like printers and mouse options), File Explorer settings, and notification preferences. For a complete list of settings that Windows can sync, see Windows 10 roaming settings reference.

    Open Sync settings

We found User Profile Central from EhlerTech that allows us to simply grab the user profile from the remote PC over LAN, and store it to a network share. From there we can then just restore it back to the PC after reinstallation, or to the new PC.

Hardly any overhead for support and we get our users up and running in minutes on their new device, as everything is in place.
