We have an analysis services object that we connect in excel for pivot tables. This has been running fine for 3 years. IN the past month it is taking very long to refresh and also prevents anything else in Excel from being opened (even outlook). What has changed?
Sorry but don't quite follow the question. Do you have an analysis services model deployed somewhere, that you connect to from Excel to view the model as pivot tables? And the refresh of that model is now taking longer?
Yes that is correct. It also makes other excel and outlook unusable. Once refresh does complete any drilling or selection of slicers triggers it again. That may have happened before but with longer time makes them unusable.
In that case, what you'll need to do is check the queries that are being issued by Analysis Services during refreshes. Is it querying a SQL Server database (as an example)? If so, you can trace the queries going to it, and find out if/why they are slow. It's likely that's where the change has occurred, either in the database or in the queries.
