Is egress cost incurred for transferring data from a blob container in a storage account to a VM in the same Canada region every day?

Hi Noushad Karuthadath,

Yes, there is a cost associated with data transfer in Azure, but it depends on the specific scenario.

If the data transfer is happening within the same Availability Zone, then the data transfer is free. This means if your Storage Account and VM are in the same Availability Zone in the Canada region, you would not incur any data transfer costs.

However, if the data transfer is happening between two different Availability Zones, even if they are in the same region, then there is a cost of $0.014 per GB. The data transfer costs in Azure apply to all services, including when a virtual machine tranfers files from storage accounts by virtual network.

when i followed the links, i see below,

so Azure VM and storage account located in same region should not incur any data egress cost when data is transferred from Azure storage to Azure VM, right ?

Also if my storage account is ZRS (data replicated across 3 zones) in Canada central region and Azure VM is running in Canada Central in AZ 1 ,then when i transfer data from storage account to Azure VM , it can be from AZ1 of storage account to AZ1 of Azure VM, so same AZs. then does it incur egress cost ? and when such data transfer happens from ZRS to Azure VM, how can we identify which AZ's data will be used to transfer to AZ1 of Azure VM ? please clarify .

Also it says there is no cost when data transfer happens between vnet resource (Azure VM) to public IP(public end point of Azure storage account) in the same region , so can this be applicable to my case ?

Hi again Noushad, Let me start with the way to identify which AZ's will use to the data transfer, Azure handles the data transfer between different Availability Zones (AZs) automatically and does not provide explicit control to the users over which AZ’s data is used. The platform ensures that the data is transferred in the most efficient way possible. This is part of Azure’s internal operations and is abstracted away from the user for simplicity and efficiency.

Going to your other questions:

Azure VM and storage account located in same region should not incur any data egress cost when data is transferred from Azure storage to Azure VM, right? Yes, you’re correct. If the Azure VM and storage account are located in the same region, there should not be any data egress cost when data is transferred from Azure storage to Azure VM.

Regarding your question about Zone-redundant storage (ZRS) and Azure VM in the same region but different Availability Zones (AZs): If your storage account is ZRS (data replicated across 3 zones) in Canada central region and Azure VM is running in Canada Central in AZ 1, then when you transfer data from the storage account to the Azure VM, it can be from AZ1 of the storage account to AZ1 of the Azure VM, so they are in the same AZ. In this case, the data transfer is free, but only in that case and as I know it's not possible to identify wich AZ is used on each data transfer.

Lastly, regarding your question about data transfer between a VNet resource (Azure VM) and a public IP (public endpoint of Azure storage account) in the same region, yes, this is applicable to your case. Data transfer between a VNet resource and a Public IP address in the same Azure Region is free. Beside use Public IP you can create a private endpoint to transfer data in the same vnet to you VM . However it's still no way to identify wich Az is making the transfer at the end for you storage ZRS.

yes, currently my storage account is Local Redundant Storage (LRS). but what will be the zone this LRS is situated in ? will it be Zone1 of canada central by default ?

So when data is accessed from the LRS storage accoun by Azure VM in Zone1 in same region, there will be no cost incurred, correct ?

Also how can i observe the costs related to data egress from storage account ? will this be reflecting on Azure VM or storage account ?

Hi Noushad, Yes, data transfer between an Azure VM and a storage account in the same region and Traffic between an on-premises location to an Azure VM via s2s VPN depends on on the amount of data transferred.
