Can I change Public IP address (Cloud Service Classic)

I'm trying to upgrade cloud service (classic). Both the production and staging slots are currently being used which obviously prevents doing the migration.

I created a separate cloud service (classic) with the same config as staging but the public IP addresses are different. Just for reference the old service was created before 2018 and doesn't have an associated vnet.

Ideally I'd want to make the new service have the same public IP address as the old service had in staging. Is it possible to do that? How would I go about it?

In a Classic Azure environment, reassigning a public IP address from one cloud service to another isn't directly supported. Each cloud service typically has its own set of public IP addresses, and they are not transferable between services.

However, you can achieve similar functionality by using a DNS CNAME record to point to the new cloud service's public IP address. Here's a general outline of the steps you can take:

Note Down Public IP Address: Make sure you have the public IP address of the staging slot of your old cloud service.

Assign Public IP to New Cloud Service: If you haven't already, assign a public IP address to your new cloud service. Make sure you have the new public IP address.

Update DNS Record: Go to your DNS provider (such as Azure DNS, GoDaddy, etc.), and update the DNS record for your domain to point to the new public IP address. You can create a CNAME record that aliases the domain name used by the old cloud service to the new cloud service's public IP address.

For example:

objectivecCopy code oldservice.example.com

This way, when someone accesses oldservice.example.com, they will be redirected to newservice.example.com, effectively pointing to the new cloud service.

Test: Ensure that the DNS record has propagated (which may take some time depending on your DNS provider), and then test accessing your old cloud service's URL. It should now point to the new cloud service.

By following these steps, you can effectively achieve the goal of having the same public IP address pointing to your new cloud service as the old one had in staging. However, it's essential to ensure that all configurations and settings in the new cloud service match those of the old one for seamless migration.

Thank you for the response - in the end I decided to update the DNS record to point to the new IP address instead
