MABS Database backup

Hello,

I need to backup the MABS Server (so the database). I have a server with the MABS agent installed and 4 VMWare VMs are backupped regularly each day.

Reading the documentation is not so clear which agent should I install on the MABS Server to backup the database itself?

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/backup/backup-the-mabs-server

I would like to use the "backup to azure" solution.

Is it sufficient to backup the SQL database through the MABS agent itself?

What should I do in case the MABS server goes down? Should I Install the MABS agent on another server, register it to the same recovery service vault and recover all the data from it?

Thank you,

Andrea

Hello @Andrea Longhitano Thank you for posting your concern on Microsoft Q&A platform.

Based on the information you provided, I understand that you want to backup the MABS database and would like to know what agent to be used.

When you install MABS, the agent is also installed. You just need to create a protection group, and start to protect the DPM DB.

For detailed information, see the steps below:

To back up the MABS server and its database, you need to install the Microsoft Azure Backup Server (MABS) agent on the MABS server itself. The MABS agent is used to back up the MABS database and other data on the server.

Here are the steps to back up the MABS server using the "backup to Azure" solution:

    1. Install the MABS agent on the MABS server.
    2. Create an Azure Backup vault and download the Azure Backup Agent installation file and vault credentials.
    3. Run the installation file to install the agent on the MABS server and use the vault credentials to register the MABS server in the vault.
    4. After the vault is configured, set up a MABS protection group that contains the MABS database. Select to back it up to disk and to Azure.

To recover the MABS database from Azure, you can use any MABS server that's registered in the Azure Backup vault. Here are the steps to recover the database:

    1. In the MABS console, select Recovery > Add External MABS.
    2. Provide the vault credentials (download from the Azure Backup vault). Note that the credentials are only valid for two days.
    3. In Select External MABS for Recovery, select the MABS server for which you want to recover the database, type in the encryption passphrase, and select OK.
    4. Select the recovery point you want to use from the list of available points. Select Clear External MABS to return to the local MABS view.

If the MABS server goes down, you can install the MABS agent on another server, register it to the same Recovery Services vault, and recover all the data from it. You can also use the Azure Backup service to restore the data to a new server in Azure.

Hope this helps. Feel free to reply if you have any further questions.
