Logging a Fire TV using VLC into a Media Server; it demands credentials

I am trying to get home videos to play from my main video server on my Amazon Fire TV. I was told to get something called VLC. I installed it, and browsed to the server. It finds the server, but at first it would not pick up the shared folder with the videos. I tinkered with the server's settings, configured it as a media server, made sure all the shares were in place, and finally got it to see the shared folders. But now, the VLC app on my Fire TV wants CREDENTIALS. It wants me to log in to the media server. THERE IS NO LOGIN RESTRICTION ON THE MEDIA SERVER. THERE IS NO PASSWORD. So I'm guessing it's wanting....network credentials? And I'm still not sure what those are. I think they're the credentials you use for login.live.com or other Microsoft cloud functions? No matter, those don't work either. What the heck does this program want from me?

VLC on Fire TV is likely looking for workgroup credentials, not necessarily your Microsoft login.

Try leaving the username and password fields blank in the VLC login.

If leaving it blank doesn't work, try entering the username and password you use to log in to your computer on your home network. These are your workgroup credentials.

Consult the server software's documentation to see if there are settings related to "guest access" or disabling login requirements for specific folders.

You may consider alternative media players on Fire TV, such as MX Player or Kodi.

    Hi Jim,

Thanks for your post. Let's try some troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue.

Please restart the Fire TV Stick by unplugging it from the power socket, after 30 seconds, plug it back in. Also check the HDMI port, make sure it is not corroded and try inserting into HDMI Arc as it is the preferred one.

Also make sure that you are entering correct Amazon credentials while trying to register your Fire TV Stick. Try resetting the password by going through our password assistance process on our website.

To reset your password once again:

    1. Go to Password assistance.
    2. When prompted, enter the email address or mobile phone number associated with your Amazon account and select Continue. We'll send you an email or SMS (depending on the verification method you've chosen) containing a One Time Password (OTP), to authenticate your request.
    3. Enter the OTP you received and select Continue.
    4. Create a new password.
    5. As soon as you've created a new password, it's active. Your new password is for all Amazon-related accounts associated with the same email address.
    6. After resetting your password try to register your device

If the issue persists, please consider resetting the device to it's factory defaults. To factory reset your Fire TV device using your remote:

    • Press and hold Back and right side of the navigation circle together for 10 seconds.
    • On the TV screen, choose to continue or cancel the factory reset. If you don't choose, the device resets automatically after several more seconds.

If you still have issue, please contact the Fire TV support channel for more assistance. Getting Started : Amazon Digital and Device Forum (amazonforum.com)

    Best Regards,
