SSMS install errors with incorrect error message while SSMS still running

I ran the 20.1 SSMS installer today, while SSMS was running, and it spat out "Something is blocking the install" but then underneath that was no explanation as to SSMS being running, but rather a funny message about my OS being unsupported (<= Win 7 SP1), despite being in Windows 11 23H2 22631.3447. I'd expect to see something like "this process is blocking the install" or "some files necessary for the install are locked" and not to see that erroneous error message.

Of course closing SSMS allows me to still install the latest version.

    Hi,Mike Pannekoek

Please refer to the official latest version of the instructions and installation requirements. Installing version 20.1 is considered an upgrade from the original version 20, but it can run in parallel with previous versions such as version 19.

The SSMS 20.x installation doesn't upgrade or replace SSMS 19.x and earlier versions. SSMS 20.x installs alongside previous versions, so both versions are available. However, if you have an earlier preview version of SSMS 20 installed, you must uninstall it before installing the latest release of SSMS 20. You can see if you have a preview version by going to the Help > About window.

This sounds like a compatibility issue. Click on the Properties. On the Compatibility tab ensure you have not enabled any compatibility options.

Which version of SSMS did you have running? 19.x or 20.0?

If you can reproduce this on a VM or similar, you could report it on https://feedback.azure.com/d365community/forum/04fe6ee0-3b25-ec11-b6e6-000d3a4f0da0. The reason I ask you to repro the situation before you report it is because it may have been a combination of things. Microsoft can only fix the issue if they can repro the issue. If you give them complete repro steps there are better chances they can do that.
