Is it possible to remove the paired server in a failover group and still have the failover group itself and the listener active?

I'm configuring our stage environment to mimic production for our failover groups, but in stage I don't want to leave the West coast paired server online. I'm hoping that I can leave the fail-over groups in place so that the listener DNS entry remains and I don't have to reconfigure the connection strings for the applications.
