How to get Japanese IME ready on school computer?

I'm on a school computer and I'd like to be able to type in Japanese. I added Japanese in the "add languages" part and let it download. When I go to the keyboards and press the Japanese one, whenever I type with it, it immediately switches from the "a" hiragana to the "A" in english. and it says "JAPANESE IME IS NOT READY".

How can I fix this? Might have some problems on a school computer.

You're right, fixing the Japanese IME (Input Method Editor) might be limited on a school computer due to administrative restrictions.

    Check Language Settings:

Open the Settings app (usually by clicking the Start button and then the gear icon).

Go to "Time & Language" and then "Language."

Click on "Japanese" and ensure it's set as the preferred language or at least added as a language for keyboards.

Click on "Japanese" again and go to "Options."

Verify that the "Microsoft IME" keyboard is installed and active.

Try using a web-based IME like Google Input Tools (https://www.google.com/inputtools/try/) to type in Japanese within a web browser. This might be a workaround if the school allows web applications.

    Hi ThatMCGal,

Thanks for your post. Based on my research, you can try the following method to see if it take effects.

    1. First, remove Japanese language support on your computer and restart Windows.
    2. After restart, click Start button and type Command Prompt, select Run as Administrator. At the UAC (user access control) prompt, enter the admin password if you are not loggedin using an admin account. If your Windows login is an admin account, click Yes to procced.
    3. At the prompt, type: Dism /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Language.Basic~~~ja-JP~0.0.1.0 You should see at the prompt an installation update showing percentage of the installation. It can take a while depending on your Internet connection so be patient.
    4. Close the Command Prompt window when complete.
    5. Restart your computer.
    6. After login, add Japanese language support as you did before and you should find you can type Japanese.

Optional, other commands to install the following:

    Dism /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Language.Fonts.Jpan~~~und-JPAN~0.0.1.0

    Dism /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Language.Handwriting~~~ja-JP~0.0.1.0

    Dism /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Language.OCR~~~ja-JP~0.0.1.0

    Dism /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Language.Speech~~~ja-JP~0.0.1.0

    Dism /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Language.TextToSpeech~~~ja-JP~0.0.1.0

    Best Regards,

    Ian Xue
