Microsoft 365 is Very Slow to respond when writing in a document

Hello,
I just purchased Microsoft Word 365 and now the documents I create become bogged down as I work in them. They stop responding quickly and I cannot move around in the document at all with any ease.
When I try to put the document away, the little circle turns around like something is wrong and I cannot shut down word at all. Please help!
