Is it possible to extract the resource group name and subscription ID from within containers running in Azure Container Apps and Azure Container Instances? If so, can anyone provide information on how to accomplish this?

Hi @ PS , Welcome to Microsoft Q&A platform , to clarify the requirement , you need from inside shell of running container to get the subscription/rg? if that is the case , can you pass subscription/rg as environment variable inside the ACI container , and then you can consume it inside ACI because inside the shell of running container it will not be aware of the context as subscription or resource group .

Thanks for prompt response.

My primary use case is to trigger public APIs exposed by Azure Container Apps and Azure Container Instances to fetch container metadata.

These APIs require subscription ID and resource group.

Does Azure Container Apps / Azure Container Instances expose this information internally to the containers ?
Or exporting via environment variables is the only way to get around it.

to clarify you need to call the REST APIs from the same container ?

what is the use case exactly ? maybe you need to travers all ACI & container APP in your subscription and check its status ? something like this

from inside ACI container the subscription and RG is not passed or populated in the context of running container

We can calling the rest APIs from the same container only.

The use case is primarily to fetch container metadata for a given workload.
Something similar to what ECS-Fargate exposes https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonECS/latest/developerguide/task-metadata-endpoint-v4-fargate.html

But I believe, ACI or Container APP doesn't provide such metadata endpoint so planning to use APIs to fetch this data
