I have been trying for hours / days to get a USB HID device to be recognized by a Windows server 2022 Datacenter Virtual Machine.

I need help getting a USB device to be recognized by a Windows Server 2022 Datacenter Virtual Machine. I have followed all the guides and tried using AI chats, but still can't make it work. The USB device shows up in the Local Resources tab of the Remote Desktop Application, and I can see it in Device Manager on my desktop, but not on the server. I have edited the group policies as recommended and can provide more information if needed. Can someone please assist me?

Context

Desktop

  1. I am using a fresh windows 11 pro desktop.
  2. In the Remote Desktop Application -> Local Resources Tab. I see the section "Other Supported RemoteFX USB devices" section and I see my device under that section. For sanity reasons I have the top level "All" box selected, and this includes my device among a few others.
  3. Under Device Manager -> Universal Serial Bus Devices. I see my device.
  4. The device shows up and is picked up by the software package locally with no problem and can be used without issue with the local software package.

Server

  1. Plain USB storage devices work fine. I can insert a device and the server picks it up and I can save files etc. as normal.
  2. The USB HID device that I want to use on the server, however, does show up and isn't registered anywhere that I can find.
  3. Under Device Manager there is not even an entry for "Universal Serial Bus Devices"
  4. The software that the device interacts with does not discover the USB device.

I followed all the guides and edited the group policies the best I could. But I just can't get this to work. I can provide more information if needed.

TLDR

I followed all the guides, set the group policies as they suggested, and I know that the device works locally. The RDP client allows me to select it when I create a connection. I just can't get the server side to recognize the device.

Can you please assist?

    Hello,

You can find more redirection settings in group policy, you can find them by

Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Device and Resource Redirection
