Hello Microsoft technical team,

We have a client who wants to upgrade OpenSSH from version 7.7 to version 9.7. Both client and server were installed with the built-in tool in Windows Server 2019. Is it possible to upgrade without manually removing and installing OpenSSH? We noticed that after the latest Windows update, the OpenSSH version still remains at 7.7. Is it safer to install other source packages in Windows Server 2019?

Thank you,

    Hello,

Typically, OpenSSH updates are provided through Windows updates, and if the version remains unchanged after an update, it indicates that the latest supported version by Windows Server 2019 is still 7.7. The update frequency and availability of specific versions through this method might not align with the rapid release cycle of OpenSSH.

As for installing other source packages on Windows Server 2019, using third-party packages could lead to compatibility issues and might not be supported by Microsoft.
