Trusted Signing - Identity Validation - Business identifier error
Hi,
I'm trying to perform Identity Validation for Trusted Signing and I can't use my ABN when using the Registered Business Number option for Business identifier. I've tried using a DUNS but I keep getting rejected.
Nevertheless I'm verified correcty in Partner Center using my ABN. I've attached a screenshot with most parameters redacted. I've tried using my ABN both with and without spaces in the number. The portal just refuses to accept my ABN.
I contacted Azure Support and they said they couldn't help and I could only get this issue resolved using Microsoft Q&A and Stack Overflow (I'm not sure why this is the case to receive support for an Azure service).

2024-06-07T20:43:52.99+00:00 Hi @Jonathon Aroutsidis ,
Could you please share you support request number with me? I'm also curious why they routed you outside of support (unless you were using the free billing support which only covers billing/subscription issues).

2024-06-08T00:52:09.8366667+00:00 The request number is 2404260030005574.
Originally I logged this as an Invalid verification failure to workaround the issue I had with ABN. I provided a DUNS and despite providing the required documents it still resulted in failure. I was then told to ensure everything matched in Partner Center. I made some changes there and that's where things went south as documented https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/partner-compliance-verification/employment-verification-gets-rejected/m-p/4046868. That has since been resolved but using a DUNS now results in instant validation failure. So I updated the support team to let them know that is happening but the portal isn't accepting an ABN which is documented in my Partner Center legal business info section.
The response I got back was "Identity Validation issues aren't supported by Azure Support, and we’ve over-delivered in this support ticket although this is an unsupported scenario for Microsoft CSS". Even though the core issue is that I can't enter a valid ABN in the portal. I specifically asked support "Who can fix the portal bug" and the response from support was "Microsoft Q&A or Stack Overflow. The Trusted Signing PMs follow and respond to general questions on the Microsoft Q&A and Stack Overflow tags listed, but they can't see CSS cases directly. They also don't have a direct view into individual validations.".
My repsonse back was "From my point of view Azure Trusted Signing service is an Azure service and the actual problem seems to be the form in the portal not accepting an ABN. The title of failed identity is a symptom of me trying to workaround the problem and not the actual problem.".
I also asked for escalation because it shouldn't matter how Microsoft implements an Azure service, Azure support (especially paid support - which this is) should be able to sort out how to get things to the correct team (even a 3rd party who is plugged into the service). Support included Rob Caplan to the chain for visibility.
Hope this helps!
Kind regards,
Jonathon

2024-06-11T06:46:30.9133333+00:00 Have you tried entering your ABN as Tax ID?

2024-06-11T07:01:17.4733333+00:00 @Meha-MSFT I haven't tried an ABN as a Tax ID because this relates to a TFN (Tax File Number) in Australia which is issued to individuals or companies. An ABN (Australian Business Number) is a Registered Business Number not a Tax ID.
Incidentally I have tried just then and the form incorrectly accepts an ABN as a Tax ID. Presumably the team will fail this because an ABN will not match a TFN which is a valid number for a Tax ID.
I'll provide an update either way but the form validation for an ABN needs to move from Tax ID to Registered Business Number.
EDIT: Verification failed about 5-10 mins later. I expected this because an ABN will not match any Tax ID's.

2024-07-05T00:23:36.97+00:00 Hi,
I just want to point out that this is not an isolated problem, and I'm guessing affects more Australian businesses right now.
I just submitted a identity to be verified myself, and was unable to put an ABN in the registered business field.
I put it in the Tax ID incorrectly as stated by the Microsoft employee in this thread as a work around. I'm hoping this will work.
However this is indeed an issue if it fails because the ABN is not a TFN. It seems the support around this thread for Jonathan has been extremely poor. Especially asking him to go to stackoverflow which is absurd as he isn't asking for help with code, it seems like the problem is not understood.
Anyhow, I hope this helps bring attention to the problem with the Azure portal and Australian businesses trying to submit identity validation.
Thanks
