It's not so much a problem but rather an inquiry on MS product more precisely Activation from Windows 11 Home Edition to Pro Edition.

I have Surface Pro 9 Home Edition and I want to upgrade it to Pro Edition.

One way that you can activate is through Windows Store. This is a suggestion in windows settings.

What Edition I'm buying from the Store? Is it Retail or OEM?

My ideal activation would be that I get a Pro OEM Edition that replaces the current Home Edition OEM. That way i can do formatting of windows and I get Pro Edition from Start without manually typing key in settings of newly installed windows.

Can you give me some details on how this works?

Thank you in advance for your help

    Hello,

When you upgrade from Windows 11 Home to Pro through the Windows Store, you are purchasing a retail license. This means that the license is not tied to a specific device and can be transferred to another device in the future if needed.

The OEM license is bundled with the hardware, meaning it comes pre-installed on the newly purchased hardware device. This license is usually provided by the original manufacturer of the device and is sold with the hardware. When you buy a computer with a pre-installed operating system from a retailer, that pre-installed operating system is the OEM version.

So, if you want to have an OEM license, you can only buy a new device.

Please note that performing a clean installation will erase all data on your device, so it's important to back up your important files before proceeding.

    Best Regards,

    Hania Lian
