Custom domain setup verified, no emails being sent or received

Please could someone help me out?

I'm trying to set up an email with custom domain name. I have a "Microsoft 365 business basic" license and have verified the custom domain in Azure. Assigned the email address, but not able to receive or send any emails?

I'm wondering if creating the email address first before verifying the domain has caused the issue? Not receiving any bounce back/non deliverable messages.
