Why is my VM so slow?

Hi Folks

I've set up a single virtual machine for accessing Power BI from a Chromebook. However, the VM fails to open about 75% of the time and wwhen it does, its so laggy i can barely use it. I manged to install Power BI, but it's unusable to the lag and it crashes more than the VM instance.

I'm connecting using Bastion. I have it running Windows 11 Pro on a Standard DS1 v2 (1 vcpu, 3.5 GiB memory).

Any suggestions on speeding it up?

Thanks

Ben

    Hello

Welcome to microsoft Q&A, thankyou for posting your query here.

A Standard DS1 v2 instance has less power than necessary to operate Power BI efficiently With 3.5 GiB of RAM and 1 vCPU. Think about upgrading your virtual machine to a tier with additional memory and cores, such a Basic B2s or a Standard DS2 v2 (2 vcpus, 7 GiB memory) (2 vcpus, 8 GiB memory).Depending on the demands of your workload, you can change the VM's size.

Ensure the new VM size is compatible with your existing VM configuration, especially the operating system. There will be a period of downtime while the VM is resized. During this time, you won't be able to access the VM. Upgrading to a larger VM size will likely increase your Azure bill. Consider the cost implications before making the change.

    Go to the Azure portal

Search for Virtual Machines and select your VM.

In the left-hand menu of the VM details page, select Size.

Select the new size you want to upgrade to, considering factors like vCPU cores, memory, and storage.

Once you've chosen the new size, review the pricing and other details. click the Resize button to initiate the upgrade process.

please find the link for the available vm sizes here.

Ensure that all of the security updates and bug fixes for Windows Virtual Machine are installed on your machine. Performance problems may arise from outdated OS.

Performance can be enhanced and temporary files removed by periodically restarting your virtual machine.

An excessive number of open apps might waste system resources and prolong the time it takes for your virtual machine to begin up.

    Hope this helps you.
