DNS TXT Record Setup and Domain Transition for Microsoft Teams

I hope this message finds you well.

We recently purchased a Microsoft Teams license, and the domain provided to us is mydomain.onmicrosoft.com. After adding a TXT DNS record on our DNS server, the Microsoft admin center indicated that our domain is already registered, showing the domain as mydomain0.onmicrosoft.com.

Currently, our users are using Microsoft Teams with user@mydomain.com. With the new license, it seems we have moved from mydomain0.onmicrosoft.com to mydomain.onmicrosoft.com. I am concerned that if we delete the old TXT DNS record and enter the new one, our users may lose their data on Microsoft Teams.

Could you please provide guidance on how to proceed without risking data loss for our users? Are there specific steps we should follow to ensure a smooth transition?

Thank you in advance for your support. I look forward to your prompt response.

    @Karwan , Amer

    It's a good practice to be cautious when making changes to DNS records and domains associated with Microsoft services to avoid any data loss or service disruption. Here are the steps you can follow to ensure a smooth transition for your users:

    1. Verify Ownership of Both Domains:

    Ensure that both mydomain.onmicrosoft.com and mydomain0.onmicrosoft.com are verified in your Microsoft 365 admin center. It's essential to confirm that you have control over both domains.

    1. Backup Data:

    Before making any changes, it may be helpful to back up critical data, if possible. This can involve exporting data from Microsoft Teams or other associated services.

    1. Review User Accounts:

    Make sure that all user accounts are correctly associated with the desired domain (mydomain.onmicrosoft.com or mydomain0.onmicrosoft.com). You can review the user accounts in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

    1. Update DNS Records:

    Follow the steps provided by Microsoft to update your DNS records:

    • Add the TXT record provided by Microsoft for mydomain.onmicrosoft.com to verify the domain.
    • Ensure that the new TXT record for mydomain.onmicrosoft.com is correctly propagated and recognized by Microsoft.
    1. Test the Transition:

    After updating the DNS records, test user access to Microsoft Teams and other services to ensure there are no disruptions. Check that users can log in and access their data without any issues.
