How can I transfer an email account from Windows AD account to Azure AD account?

I am not sure where to ask this question. I inherited a client whose former IT setup all users in On-Premise AD, used Azure AD Sync to populate Azure AD and has all the email accounts in M365. Now the clients wants to shut down the On-Premise AD. To accomplish this it seems I need to delete the on-premise AD account, let Azure AD Sync update Azure AD then go back to M365 and create an account with the same name. How to I keep from losing the email and reconnect it to the new account?

Shashi Shailaj 7,621 Reputation points Microsoft Employee2020-11-25T08:47:36.377+00:00 @rpspiker , You have mentioned that the accounts were setup in on-prem AD and synced to AzureAD along with everyone having M365 accounts (I assume you mean licenses). So If they already have M365 licenses then they would get a mailbox with every license and the email is already on M365?Could you please provide clarity on why you believe you will need to create account with same name when you already have those accounts synced to Azure AD and you just need to assign the license to the users. One scenario could be that Azure AD tenant is different and M365 tenant is different but I would like confirmation from you to suggest further ? Also are all users remote and have windows 10 devices for accessing LOB apps ? And are all application migrated to cloud and they don't depend upon legacy protocols like NTLM / Kerberos ? there are some consideration depending upon the kind of apps you may have in your organization as per which you can decide whether to shutdown on-prem totally?
