Hello all,

So I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 for a client that is on a schedule to update once a month and it is finding updates KB2919355 and installs it. The result is successful, but minutes later it installs it again and again and again (It installed 35 times during this months patch window). For months on end the same update keeps coming back as the update to install and every time it's the same loop again.

Any idea what I can do about this? Any advice is welcome. If you need additional information please let me know.

Thanks.

That's a really old one. Have later updates installed? The latest SSU

followed by the latest Monthly Rollup
The latest always contains new fixes plus the previous monthly update.

After looking further down the Patch History I can say for sure that this server has not installed any other patches since getting into the loop for KB2919355. The records show that it started in 09/14/2018 so yes it's been a while since the server in question has been updated. Also, before 09/14/2018 patching had no issues at all it seems.

I just inherited this server since I just started here so I've been catching up with a lot of older patching stuff.

Would it be ok to manually push the latest patch to the server and should that fix this infinite loop?

I'd try installing the latest SSU

    Hi,

We could try manually push the latest patch KB4586845 to the server and the latest does contain new fixes plus the previous monthly update. Before installing KB4586845, we strongly recommend that you install the latest servicing stack update (SSU) KB4566425. SSUs improve the reliability of the update process to mitigate potential issues while installing the Rollup and applying Microsoft security fixes.

As for KB2919355, we can skip it by

    • Press Windows key + R, type appwiz.cpl, then press Enter
    • Choose “View installed updates”, find KB2919355 and uninstall it.
    • Download the "Show or hide updates" troubleshooter. When you click on the download link, you will be prompted to open or save wushowhide.diagcab. Opening wushowhide.diagcab will launch the troubleshooter. Then click Next to proceed and follow the instructions provided by the troubleshooter to hide KB2919355.
