Use the following process:
Step 1: Create a New User Account
Open Settings:
- Press
Win + I
to open the Settings app.
Go to Accounts:
- In the Settings window, go to
Accounts
.
Add a New User:
- Click on
Family & other users
on the left sidebar. - Under
Other users
, clickAdd account
.
Add Without a Microsoft Account:
- In the Microsoft account setup window, click on
I don't have this person's sign-in information
. - Click on
Add a user without a Microsoft account
.
Create the Local Account:
- Enter the username and password for the new user.
- Fill in the security questions.
- Click
Next
to create the new user account.
Step 2: Copy Selected Data to the New User Account
Log in to the New Account:
- Log out of your current account.
- Log in to the new user account at least once to create the necessary folders.
Log Back into Your Main Account:
- Log out of the new user account and log back into your main account.
Navigate to User Folders:
- Open
File Explorer
. - Navigate to
C:\Users\YourMainUserName
to access the files of the main account. - Navigate to
C:\Users\NewUserName
to access the new user account.
Copy Selected Data:
- Copy the folders and files you want to transfer from
C:\Users\YourMainUserName
toC:\Users\NewUserName
. - You can choose to copy documents, pictures, desktop items, etc.
- Ensure you do not copy system files or settings to avoid conflicts.
Step 3: Adjust Permissions if Necessary
- Set Permissions:
- Right-click on the copied folders in the new user account directory.
- Select
Properties
. - Go to the
Security
tab and clickEdit
. - Ensure the new user account has the necessary permissions (usually Full Control or Modify).
Step 4: Finalize Setup
- Log into the New User Account:
- Log out of your main account and log back into the new user account.
- Verify that the copied data is accessible and that the new account is set up as desired.
Note that you won't be able to copy settings which are stored in Windows Registry. For that, you'd need to export and import the corresponding registry keys/entries
