replacing windows 2012 file server with windows 2022 file server

Question

I have a windows 2012 file server and separately built a windows 2024 file server to replace it. The 2022 server has a temporary name/ip and we've robo copied the files between the 2 servers. share name and file permissions are configured the same, both joined to the domain. testing shows no issues going to \server1\folder1 and \server2\folder1.

So we turn off the windows 2012 server. Delete the windows 2012 server object from the domain. Then rename the 2022 server to the same name as the 2012 server also the same ip as the 2012 and join it to the domain.

The main issue is when users try to access their smb folders they are getting prompted for username and password. What am I missing here?

You should've used Storage Migration Service, which takes care of all these tasks for you automatically. More at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/storage-migration-service/overview

In the current configuration, you might want to ensure that share level permissions are applied correctly as well

Hi Apelin,

Thanks for your post. I understand that after migrating to Windows Server 2022, you get a prompt to enter network credentials to access files over network. I’ll certainly help you with the issue.

Ideally, if you have never used credentials to access files over network, you may want to check the network settings and see if Password protected sharing is turned off. To do this, refer the steps mentioned below:

1. Go to control panel > Click on network and internet > Click on network and sharing.
2. Click on Change advance sharing settings on the left pane.
3. Turn off password protected sharing.
4. Click on Save changes
