Hi All,
We are doing upgrade from SQL 2008R2 to SQL 2016, during upgrade replication feature is failing.
Its asking to check SQL Logs, we checked SQL logs and there is no errors.
Let me know how to proceed on this.
Error:
Feature: SQL Server Replication

Reason for failure: An error occurred during the setup process of the feature.
Next Step: The upgrade process for SQL Server failed. Use the following information to resolve the error, and then repair your installation by using this command line: setup /action=repair /instancename=PROD

Error description: There was an error executing the Replication upgrade scripts. See the SQL Server error log for details.
Tried upgrading to SQL 2012, getting same error.
There is no publication and subscription on that server /instance, i don't know whether distribution database is in use or not. how can i confirm that?

And which SQL Server version ist the subscriber of the replication?
If I remind it right the subscriber must have the same or up to 2 version higher the the publisher.
Tried upgrading to SQL 2012, getting same error.

How many servers or nodes do you have? Have you configured the Always On Availability Groups or Failover Cluster Instances?
We can configure distribution using the New Publication Wizard or the Configure Distribution Wizard. After the Distributor is configured, view and modify properties in the Distributor Properties - <Distributor> dialog box.

I’m trying to find whether this server distribution is really used or not. As per my pre check its not being used, but I need to confirm it.
This is a SQL 2008 R2 standalone server and there is no publication and subscription under replication. There is no, Always-on or failover cluster in this server. There is no data in distribution database tables, if I got to distributor properties, I see only one instance and distribution database, if I see publisher properties no publication databases are selected. Noting is showing up in Replication Monitor. There are no jobs on this server related to replication.
I don’t want to create any new publication or subscription. My doubt is someone might have configured this distribution on this server and not using it, I just want to confirm it if this distribution database is in use or not.

From this official document, we can get the information below:
The distribution database stores metadata and history data for all types of replication, and transactions for transactional replication.
You mentioned that 'This is a SQL 2008 R2 standalone server and there is no publication and subscription under replication.', I think this distribution database is not in use.
You just want to upgrade SQL Server from 2008 R2 to 2016, here is a link providing steps in detail, you can follow it and try to upgrade server.
NOTE: Please make sure you’re running SQL Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 3 (SP3) or SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 4 (SP4).
