Is there a policy to prevent the Opera browser from being installed with a user without elevated permissions?

I only want to have it installed with administrator permissions.

    Hello Mario,

Thank you for posting in Q&A forum.

You can try the methods below to prevent Opera (or any other software) from being installed without administrator permissions.

Here are a few methods you can consider:

    1.Group Policy:

    • Open the Group Policy Editor by typing gpedit.msc in the Run dialog (Win + R).
    • Navigate to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates

-> Windows Components -> Windows Installer.

    • Find the policy called "Always install with elevated privileges" and ensure it is Disabled.
    • Additionally, you can define a Software Restriction Policy under Computer Configuration

-> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Software Restriction Policies, and disallow the installation of specific EXE files like the Opera installer if needed.

    2.Local Security Policy:

    • Open the Local Security Policy by typing secpol.msc in the Run dialog.
    • Navigate to Software Restriction Policies -> Additional Rules.
    • Create a new path rule disallowing the execution of Opera installer files.

    3.User Account Control (UAC):

    • Ensure that UAC settings are configured to require administrator approval for installations. This can be done via the Control Panel under User Accounts -> Change User Account Control settings. Set it to "Always notify" to ensure admin permissions are required for installations.

    4.Third-Party Management Tools:

    • Consider using third-party software management tools that allow you to control which applications can be installed and executed on your systems.

Note: Please test in lab first before you deploy it in production environment.

I hope the information above is helpful.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to let us know.

    Best Regards,

    Daisy Zhou
