Azure Storage Explorer 1.15.1, 1.16.0: Download issues (OK with 1.10.1)

My colleagues and I are having trouble downloading files from our datalake (ADLS Gen2) using Storage Explorer.
These struggles have been going on for a few months, since installing 1.15.1 and now with 1.16.0
To fix the problem, we have to install 1.10.1.
The hint of rolling back to 1.10.1 was found in this bug report:

Although similar, the above bug does not accurately represent our situation and the best solution other than roll-back (modified settings.json) does not fix our issue.

We're all on windows 10.
Occurs for various files/types in various folders.

The symptoms we observe are the following:
-First download works, but gives an error message:
Transfer of 'lake/path' to 'disk/path' failed: 0 items transferred, error: error occurred while cancelling the job #####0-0214-####-5a82-####: Can't cancel JobID=#####0-0214-####-5a82-#### because it has already completed (used SAS, discovery completed)
-Subsequent downloads get queued but never complete.
