Always on VPN - Device Tunnel VPN Adapter fails to register DNS

2020-12-02T12:17:07.007+00:00

Hi All,

We have Always on VPN Device Tunnel deployed and occasionally we are observing the VPN Adapter fails to register with DNS. It will not show the domain name under the VPN Adapter. If the connection name is Test_AOVPN, it establishes connection, and goes to Identifying and then do not resolve to DNS name. And internal resources accessibility is not going through.

After multiple restarts of PC, it gets resolved automatically.

Any inputs on this front would be very much helpful.

Client - Windows 10 version 1909
RRAS Server - Windows Server 2016
IKEV2 - Device Tunnel

Thanks,
Aditya.

    Hi ,

Did you define RegisterDNS element in ProfileXML to enable DNS registration?

Also check “Register this connection’s addresses in DNS” tick box under the DNS settings of the IPv4 section of the VPN adapter.

    Hi Candy,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, those details are added in the profile. We have limited machines currently on boarded and we are working on identifying the issues. The issue is not happening on all the devices, it is random. It breaks the connectivity for some time. sometimes few minutes, sometimes like more than 1 hour.

Need to reboot to sort the same.

    Thanks & Regards,
    Aditya Kumar.

I am experiencing the same problem with my Always On Device VPN tunnel.

For some reason "RegisterThisConnectionsAddress" is not set on my AOVPN connections even though I have enabled RegisterDNS in ProfileXML.

I can solve the problem by running the command below, but I don't understand why "RegisterDNS" in ProfileXML is not implemented on the client computer!?

set-DnsClient -InterfaceAlias "Always On VPN Device" -RegisterThisConnectionsAddress $True -UseSuffixWhenRegistering $false

Do you have any idea what I am doing wrong?
