Windows 10 PC power off button doesn't work.

Question

In the start menu, the buttons for "Update and shut down", "Shut down", "Update and restart", and "Restart" all do nothing when clicked. My Windows Update tab is also permanently stuck on "Something went wrong", and there is no way for me to update the computer, which would also help some of my other issues. What's going on?

Hi James,

You can try this:

• right-click the startbutton
• select powershell (admin) or terminal (admin)
• at the promt type
• shutdown -r -f -t 0
• (-r (restart) -f (force) -t 0 (wait 0 seconds))

This should restart your device, after the restart try running updates again

Are there any errors reported on the update page? It is recommended that you provide a screenshot.

Running the update troubleshooter. Select Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter.

Restarting the update services. You can do this by using the Services tool (services.msc) and stopping and starting the following services: Windows Update, Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and Cryptographic Services.

Check if there is enough disk space available on your system drive. If not, free up some space and try the update again.

Check Event log to find out any errors.
