Upgrade Azure VM OS

Hi,

I have an Azure VM running Windows Server 2016, and I want to upgrade it to Windows Server 2019. I currently have two options:

  1. In-place upgrade: In-place upgrade guide
  2. Deploying a new Windows Server 2019 VM

I am inclined to choose the in-place upgrade option. However, I have concerns about how this will affect my Reserved Instance. Will I need to renew it as well? How will the licensing work? Are there any other considerations I should be aware of?

Please advise.

Thank you.

When you're running Windows VM instances, the reservation is applied to cover the infrastructure costs. So, you may change the OS as needed. However, note that, you're charged separately for Windows software on a per vCPU basis. See Windows software costs with Reservations

    Hope this helps.
