I am having an issue with SQL Server 2022 installation. The feature not installing is the Database Engine Services.Summary_TheYoda_20240806_145631.txt

In the folder that you found this file, there is also a file detail.txt. This file gives more information why the installation failed. Upload it, so that we can take a look.

It seems from you summary file that you have made one more installation attempt. The error you get is one I've seen before, but I have not been able to understand. But I have a feeling that it's an error that happens when you make a new attempt, possibly with some random cleanup in between. That is, the original error was something else.

Have a look at https://www.sql-easy.com/learn/how-to-uninstall-sql-server/. Some users have reported success after having followed the instructions in that article. I have not tried it myself. (I have not had reason to.)

Also, checkout this article about a known issue which could be your root cause.

Erland I have uninstalled and reinstalled SQL Server 2022 multiple times with the same result. Should I fully uninstall everything again and then send summary and details on only the first attempt.

Follow the instructions in the article. I suspect that the reason for this failure is that there are things still around.

And checkout that troubleshooting article.

Or just raise the white flag and install on a virtual machine instead...

Hi Adrian,

Please following the blog Erland mentioned to clean the SQL server installation completely, restart the server before reinstalling a new SQL server. Run the SQL server setup file as administrator for new installation.

Hi Cathy,

I followed the document and deleted everything, I even reset my computer as it is new but I continue to get the same error message. I reinstalled SQL Server 2022 and it gave me two logs even though I only installed it once. Here is the detail of the latest install. Detail.txt

No, it is not the same error as yesterday. It is another file that is missing. And later this happens:

(01) 2024-08-07 10:50:18 Slp: Cannot find registry key 'SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL16.MSSQLSERVER\ConfigurationState'.

Both the missing file (also one I've seen missing with several posters here) and the error above suggests an incomplete or incorrectly performed uninstall.

Don't feel too bad about this. We are not supposed to have to engage in these exercises, not the least messing with the registry. I am not going to say that I would be able to sort out this situation myself if it would happen to me.

I think that we are the point where I would encourage you to try a virtual machine. Yes, if you have never used or created a virtual machine before there is a hurdle. However, virtual machines are tremendous assets, and assuming that you aim at being in some sort of developer role, it is absolutely worth learning the basics about using virtual machines.

You would install SQL Server on the VM and then run SSMS from your regular machine.

Hi Adrian,

You may try to use process monitor to trace the installation progress of SQL server. Fiter setup.exe and ScenarioEngine.exe progress, you may find the reason of this failure.

Attached is the process monitor report. Can you please let me know if there is anything you see that needs to be addressed? If not, I will work on the virtual machine as suggested by Erland.

I apologize but the file was a .pml and it would not attach but I did find a lot of files that had a result of NAME NOT FOUND, FILE LOCKED WITH ONLY READER, BUFFER OVERFLOW.

If so, Virtual machine is a good choice as Erland mentioned. Otherwise, you need to check which file, or registry could not be found, which file needed by the installation process is currently being used by another application in read-only mode?
