What could have gone wrong?

This is the second time it is happening in one year.

Storage sense is disabled. System has been scanned no malware or virus.

    Sometimes, files may be moved to the cloud’s recycle bin or archived folder.

    Check if OneDrive or any other cloud service is set to selectively sync folders. If the Desktop folder was deselected, files might have been removed from the local system.

    Check Event Viewer for any profile-related errors.

    Check OneDrive settings to see if Desktop sync is enabled and functioning correctly.

    Your files might be in the Recycle Bin if they were deleted rather than disappeared.

    1. Right click the desktop, choose "View" and check whether "show desktop icons" option is enabled.
