HI, I have configured Health Check on my VMSS, and enabled automatic OS upgrade. I found one of the VM failed the health check probably after OS upgrade or deployment. I am looking for a way to be able to query this VM instance Health state , so that I can set up alert via email. This is what I have done: I have enabled VMSS insights and linked to Log Analytics workspace. I have created diagnostic setting to collect all Activity logs under this subscription to send to another Log Analytics workspace. I found there are plenty logs and metrics in Log Analytics workspace, and I want to know which metric should I use to setup alert rule query? What if I also want to monitor VM instance Status and VM instance Provisioning state ?

You can use queries in your Log Analytics workspace to monitor your VMs. Check the health status of your VMs first and make sure they are healthy. Next, check the VM status and confirm that they are working properly. Finally, monitor the provisioning status to ensure that the VMs are being properly provisioned.

To receive email notifications about any issues, go to Azure Monitor and click Alerts. Then select the new alert rule and select your specific VMSS. Use the queries you create to specify when you want to be alerted, such as if a VM is bad. Then, create a practice group that emails you when a problem occurs. Finally, save your alerts.

Don’t forget to check the alerts to make sure they are working as expected!
