Can't add account to authenticator app

I am trying to add my school email to the authenticator app, but when I try to sign in it asks for a code from the app. Which I can't do since I am currently trying to sign in on the app. When I pick more options, it's either "Approve request from app" or "use verification code" from the app. I can't do either when I am trying to sign in to my account on the authenticator app :( How do I add an account when I can't use the verification methods to sign in?
