Error 'Email is required to activate a sandbox or lab' while creating the sandbox

I get the following error while creating the sandbox
"Email is required to activate a sandbox or lab
Your Microsoft account must be linked to a valid email to activate a sandbox or lab. Go to Microsoft Account Settings to link your email and try again."

When I try to add account in My Profile --> Settings -->Account Management (Linked accounts), same settings page opens up after entering the email id on microsoft login page and no account is linked.

I need it to activate my sandbox for Describe core Azure architectural components Exercise - Create a website hosted in Azure.

The same question was asked and answered on Stack Overflow.
Eventually what helped me was to log out from docs and live, and login again with my email address instead of using an alias.
