Force "save as" for documents

For shared word documents on SharePoint, is there a way to force to do "save as" on a word document when clicking it?

We use certain documents as templates so people can fill in the information. Currently, everyone having access to the document can open the word document and edit it, but that can introduce changes to the template unintentionally.

I tried to set the document as "read-only" before uploading it, but people can still edit and save the document at the original location. It would be nice if clicking on the document triggers a "save as" dialog. Is there a way to do it?

Thank you!

    @Annie
    I suggest you use document template in the document library. Here’re steps:

    1.Add document template in the new menu.

    2.Click document template in the new menu, a new document based on the document template will be created in the document library.

    3.Users can create many different documents based on the document template without affecting the document template.

    Templates should end in their respective template format, i.e. DOTX rather than DOCX. In addition, the template should be uploaded to the New menu rather than being placed directly in the Doc Lib. This should force users to generate a brand new DOCX based on your DOTX template when creating a new document.

    Thank you! It looks like it should work, but I do not have certain access. Thanks anyways!
