Hello,

I'm trying to get an answer to my theory in my head how to remove last exchange in a hybrid setup.

Currently in hybrid with dirsync & Exchange 2010

I know you can't remove remove last exchange and keep dirsync.

My question is, Can i remove the dirsync then remove last exchange and about a month later enable the dirsync without needing the exchange?

Does it still cause the need for ADSIEdit ?

I can't find any information on this way

We want to get rid of on premise server but not support with dirsync.

I can't see anything saying that if i remove the dir sync and decommision on premise exchange, that I can't re enable the dir sync later.

I wanted to know if I would still need the on premise exchange if i enable the dirsync again.

I haven't read anything like this, wasn't sure if it was supported.

Yes, you will need an on-prem Exchange Server if using AADConnect to be supported. No matter what the steps are taken, if AADConnect or ADFS are being used, an Exchange Server is required on-prem to be supported

that doesnt mean you can't use ADUC or ADSIEDIT to manage accounts on-prem, it just means you won't be supported if you choose to remove the last Exchange Server

Ok, great but what i dont get is that if i remove the dirsync and decommission the exchange, this is supported.

What stops adding dirsync on again later? I'm just wanted to know whats stopping it, in theory your have converted the users to cloud ones so has no relation to AD. Install the dirsync after will be fresh.

Well, nothing stops it :)

If you disable dirsync completely on the Azure side, , you can enable it later:

But that is not something you really should be doing. :)

IThere are other considerations as well such as Password sync, authentication and such.

In other words, if you decide that everything will be mastered in Azure, and not on-prem, you can take the necessary steps, but once you do, you dont want to undo that, so dont take those steps until you are ready.
