I am trying to setup my controller on my model railway system which is connected to my laptop via a serial port. I have software to do an upgrade of the controller, but when running the upgrade I either get an error reported "Error in open port" or "error in closing port".
The running of the Railmaster system on the laptop is also having problems communicating with the controller. On firing up the Railmaster software, I keep getting the message "Railmaster cannot communicate with the controller". It is like the port is closed.
I have reinstalled the driver many times using Device Manager, followed many online help for COM port issues in Windows 11 including power settings.
My laptop is up to date as far as patches are concerned.The controller was working fine, but I am not sure if the problem started after a series of Windows updates.

Did the controller work with this pc before?
If it is the first time to use the controller on this machine, please pay attention to the user guide of the controller. Especailly pay attention to the com port mode of this machine. As far as I know, the com port may have 232 or 485 mode. We could changed it from the bios option. We may try different com port mode if there are multiple com ports.
According to the error code, there may be software conflict. Please try to check it in clean boot mode.

This is a replacement controller. The 1st one broke.
I managed to fix the problem by plugging an external drive into the port. This all worked well. I then unplugged the external drive and plugged the controller back in the port. Suddenly everything worked as per norm. Somehow it looks like the controllers driver was reset and now works as it should.
