Hi!

I am doing this training: Prepare to maintain SQL databases on Azure

And it says the below which really confuses me.

It makes a difference between VCore of SQL Database and Vcores of General Purpose, and in the Standard Edition it does not include a VCore of SQL Database - But does not a SQL Database always come with a VCore? So why do they add it separately to the Enterprise Edition.. I don't understand, please help

  • For each core of Enterprise Edition with Active Software Assurance, you're eligible for one vCore of SQL Database or SQL Managed Instance Business Critical, and eight vCores of General Purpose.
  • For each core of Standard Edition with Active Software Assurance, you're eligible for one vCore of General Purpose.

Vcore represents the size, power and features (say failover speed) of the virtual machine hosting your sql database.

when you create a azure sql database, you will pick the Vcore type and number of Vcores for that database.

The way I read it is that the vCores are benefits. There are no technical connections here. It could just as well say "for each core of Enterprise Edition, you are entitled to a free night at the Ramadama Hotel". (Which of course would be a very funny benefit, but that's another story.)

On the other hand, the cores (without the v in front) are stuff that you pay for.
