How to fix "Get an app to open this 'res' link" error

Keep getting an error window popping up stating, "Get an app to open this 'res' link". I got this a few months back when trying to use Intuit ProSeries after a Windows 11 update. Both Microsoft and Intuit were claiming it was the other's issue, and no one offered any suggestion other than reinstalling Windows. (!!)

Today all I'm doing is backing up files from my NAS to an external HDD and the error window keeps occasionally popping up. Anyone have any suggestions?

    Hello Dave Todd,

Thank you for posting in Q&A forum.

Based on my research, it should be some third-party app use IE with res protocol to browsing local machine, and this behavior is no longer allowed.

Reference: res Protocol | Microsoft Learn

If you want to prevent res protocol been used, you could try to delete the Register Key

    ‘HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\res’

And make sure you have a backup before you do it.

I hope the information above is helpful.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to let us know.

    Best Regards,
