What character is generated by alt-CR?

When a string is entered into Excel as separate lines by inserting alt-CR, what character represents that? I want to use it as an argument to the substitute() function, or otherwise determine in VBA code the number of lines occupied by a string in a comment.

It is more complicated than that. Neither 10, 11, 12, or 13 are present in the string. There is some other property that is represented as a CR/LF.

Actually, 10 is present in the string. In cell A1 enter the string "ab<Alt-CR>cd". In cell A2 enter the formula =CODE(MID(A1,1,1)). This will display 97 for the letter 'a'. Increment the second MID argument repeatedly to get 98, 10, 99, and 100, in turn.

CR as in Carriage Return or Enter?

If so, the character code for a line-feed is 10
