How to fix Error code: 0xc0000001

Hey,

I was redirected here from answers.microsoft.com. I'm facing the 0xc0000001 error, boot loops, and the Recovery Screen.

I've already watched around 40 tutorials and read multiple websites, but nothing has helped so far.

Startup repair isn't working, uninstalling updates doesn't work, System Restore isn't working, and Startup Settings redirects back to the Recovery Screen with the 0xc0000001 error.

The only thing I can do is use CMD through recovery, and I have a bootable USB drive, which is the only helpful thing I can use right now.

I’m using a GPT partition with UEFI.

Here’s what hasn’t worked:

  • SFC /scannow: Sometimes it runs and "repairs," but other times it shows errors.
  • Chkdsk F: /r /f
  • Bootrec /fixMBR
  • Bootsect /nt60 sys
  • Bootrec /fixboot
  • Bootrec /rebuildbcd (After doing this, it sees Windows, but not after a reboot. I still get the same error.)
  • bcdboot f:\windows /s f: (After trying this, still no success after reboot).

After nothing else worked, I deleted the UEFI and recovery partitions (maybe that wasn't the best idea, but nothing was working), and that didn’t help either.

Additionally, I used commands like:

  • attrib v:efi\microsoft\boot -h -r -s (Now in V:(EFI partition) I have folders: EFI, Boot, bootmgr, BOOTNXT, system volume information, V:\Boot).
  • Bcdedit /export f:\BCD_Backup, ren f:\boot\bcd bcd.old, Bootrec /rebuildbcd.
  • dism /image:F:\ /cleanup-image /restorehealth /source:I:\sources\install.wim (The operation completed successfully).

SrtTrail.txt says that the recently serviced boot binary is corrupt, and ntbtlog.txt shows multiple BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED entries.

Here’s some more background: About two months ago, I accidentally clicked on an optional Windows Update, which caused the system to stop working. System Restore didn’t help back then, but I managed to fix it using basic CMD commands. The update kept showing up as optional afterward, but I was able to roll it back. However, when I tried again later, it failed once more, and I had to manually delete update files and disable Windows Update.

Over the past six months, every optional update I accidentally clicked on has caused issues. The most recent one made me think I could fix it the same way I did before, but this time it didn’t work.

I had a Windows update that I didn’t want, but after hibernating my PC, I turned it on the next day, and it booted slowly and encountered errors like 0xc0000001, 0xc0000225, and 0xc0000098. Now, I only get 0xc0000001, and the only things I have in the recovery options are:

  • Continue
  • Troubleshoot
  • Use a device
  • Turn off your PC

Inside Troubleshoot, I have:

  • Startup Repair
  • UEFI Firmware Settings
  • CMD
  • System Restore
  • Uninstall updates
  • System Image Recovery

At the very beginning, after the update, I also tried using a restore point and uninstalling updates, but neither worked.

I am using Windows 10, and I am not interested in reinstalling Windows or losing any data. I want to repair the current system without starting fresh. If any other logs are needed, I can provide them.

I also installed a second Windows 10 system on another drive to write this request for help.

Additionally, when the broken system has a higher startup priority, I can’t even choose between the two systems during boot. When I boot into the new system, I can choose the option to switch between them.

I’ve got 2TB of data on my system drive and don’t want to create new backups. I have important work-related files and projects already configured on this machine, which I can’t afford to lose.

I also don’t want to lose my Windows configurations, environment paths, software, IDEs, or other programs stored on separate drives that might stop working due to missing registry entries or drivers stored on the system drive.

Losing important settings and files that I might not immediately recall could also be problematic.

I’ve spent the last two years building these configs and can’t imagine reinstalling everything. I’ve got over 400 apps in Apps & Features, and 165 folders in Program Files—it's a bit messy, but it works for me.

By the way, I tried using the option to reinstall Windows without losing files by booting from a USB drive, but it doesn’t even show up as an option (and even if it did, this wouldn’t be a satisfactory option for me).

I'd appreciate any further insights or suggestions from someone who might have another idea. Logs can be provided if necessary.

Thanks.

    Hello Kuba B,

Thank you for posting in Q&A forum.

The error code 0xc0000001 means there may be issues with the boot device or corruption in some boot files.

Since you have tried so many solutions, this could also be due to problems with the computer's boot sector or hardware.

Sorry I can't open your file link, it's important to note if the "Defective Disk" error mentioned in srttrail.txt could mean that your hard drive may physically damage.

I hope the information above is helpful.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to let us know.

    Best Regards,

    Daisy Zhou
