I want to call an API through APIM as a proxy from an MS Fabric Notebook, but there's currently no private endpoint from MS Fabric to APIM. My goal is to establish private connectivity from MS Fabric to the Azure service hosting my API. However, calling an Azure Function on an ASE with an isolated plan from MS Fabric via a private endpoint is not working.

The question is whether there is an alternative way to securely call an API on Azure?

Hi David - I dont know enough about notebooks to understand their specific network capbility

but from an APIM side (and depending on tier) you can either have APIM part of a VNET or with a private endpoint. For private in and private out for APIM you need the Premium SKU

Therefore the notebook would either need to run on compute within a VNET (or linked to a VNET) or have the capability of ingesting a private endpoint (some ML services can do this, Az front door can also do this for certain services)

if private access isnt possible it may be possible in the notebook to initiate a call with an oauth token toward APIM or via mtls (APIM supports both). A fallback would be basic auth or just an API key (again supported) but this is not so secure even with SSL/TLS

Remember that if both client (notebook host) and APIM are in Azure , even traffic between public Ips would stay on our backbone, it would NOT route via the internet.

A colleague or forum member familiar with notebooks should be able to add more
