For the SMTP Auth to work you need to deactivate th security defaults inside the EntraID Tenant, as this is enabled by default.
Also you need to exclude the user, with which you are trying to connect to SMTP server, from the MFA inside the conditional access policy.
After that you need to add the SMTP Auth to the mailbox of the user either in the Microsoft Admin Portal or Powershells Exchange Online module.
