Microsoft Purview eDiscovery(premium) : Which file format export when export MS Teams data from Review Set?
When exporting Microsoft Teams data from a review set in Microsoft Purview eDiscovery (Premium), the data can be exported in PST (Personal Storage Table) file format. However, there are other file formats that can be used for exporting data from Microsoft Teams in eDiscovery (Premium), such as Load File Format (DAT), Native File Format, and CSV File. The choice of file format depends on the specific needs of the legal review and analysis process.

When Teams and Viva Engage conversations setting is true and all the conversations are export as conversation thread in HTML File but sometimes some messages are exported in MSG format. Could you please help us here to identify in which scenario HTML format will be export or MSG Format will be export or Both format will be export?
In Microsoft Purview eDiscovery (Premium), the export format for Teams and Viva Engage conversations can vary based on the type of content and the context in which it was created or shared. Chat messages and conversation threads in Teams and Viva Engage are typically exported in HTML format, while emails sent within Teams, calendar invites, and meeting requests may be exported in MSG format. In mixed content scenarios where a conversation includes both standard chat messages and email content, a combination of HTML and MSG files may be included in the export.

We observed when Teams and Viva Engage conversations setting is true conversation will be exported to HTML format and for Single thread message it will be MSG format but after few months we are receive both type of file format under Condensed Export format while configure conversation thread option true.
The behavior you're observing in Microsoft Purview eDiscovery (Premium) regarding the export formats for Teams and Viva Engage conversations can indeed vary based on the specific configurations and updates to the eDiscovery tool. When the Teams and Viva Engage Conversations Setting is True, conversation threads are generally exported in HTML format to capture the entire conversation context. However, individual messages within a conversation thread, especially those that involve email elements, may be exported in MSG format. When the Condensed Export Format setting is enabled, the export includes both HTML and MSG formats to provide a comprehensive view of the conversation. The HTML files will contain the threaded conversation, while MSG files will contain individual messages that need to be preserved in their native format.
Summary:
- HTML Format: Used for threaded conversations and chat messages when the Teams and Viva Engage conversations setting is true.
- MSG Format: Used for single-thread messages, emails, calendar invites, and other email-related content.
- Both Formats: When using the Condensed Export format with the conversation thread option set to true, both HTML and MSG formats may be included to ensure comprehensive data capture.
I hope this information helps, please do let us know if you have any further queries.
Thank you.
