Error size limits when moving files between site collections in SharePoint Subscription Edition over 50mb

I'm facing some issues when using the "Move to" function between site collections in the modern library in SharePoint Subscription Edition. I'm getting an error message when the total size of the move is over 50 Mb. Moving within the site collection works fine with the same amount of data (over 50Mb).

The error message is "File size exceeds limit".

It is not related to the threshold for upload size as that is set to 15Gb for the farm.

I cannot find any information about this limit anywhere in the documentation form Microsoft. If anyone knows where I can find more information about how to adjust this limit, please let me know.

Current patch level is July 2024 CU.

Regards

Mattias

    Hi @Mattias Vassberg,

Really appreciate your reply, but I'm still confused about this file size limit error. (It's common for a file to be 50MB in size, this shouldn't have a size limit.)

Maybe this article I referenced: Software boundaries and limits for SharePoint Servers 2016 and 2019 is so old that SharePoint server subscription edition there may be a new update about the limit on moving files.

I apologize for not being able to provide any further solutions to your problem with the resources we currently have available in the forum. We suggest you open a ticket.

Please accept my sincerely apologize for any in convenience this may cause. Thank you for your kind understanding.

Hi @Mattias Vassberg,I apologize for the late reply.

I checked the information and for SharePoint Subscription Edition there isn't any setting for moving file sizes. The only limitations on file movement are those imposed by SharePoint for performance reasons.

I highly doubt there is a problem with your server, perhaps you could try restarting your web application in IIS Service and retry if the problem persists.

If the issue is not resolved, we suggest you check the ULS Log to find the error logs that are causing problems during the move. You can share the logs with me, which will help us to locate the cause of the problem.

    Hi @Mattias Vassberg,

Thank you for posting in this community.

First of all, that's a rare question. Since I checked all the limits with moving files, you don't seem to be exceeding the limits. Just in case, could you please double-check those limits?

Moving and copying across sites Copying/Moving multiple files in a single operation has three requirements:

    • No more than 100-GB total file size.
    • No more than 30,000 files.
    • File size limits:

The problem could also be some issue with site collection or the browser. We may need to run some of the following tests to narrow down where the problem is occurring, please let me know the results of your tests:

    1. Are other users facing the same problem? View through another computer or account.
    2. Check if the same issue occurs with other SharePoint site collections. I suggest you create a new site collection and then try to move files to this new site collection.
    3. You could try to clear browser cache then restart it.
    4. Try to use a different browser or your browser's InPrivate mode to see if the same error occurs.

If the problem persists, I suggest you install August 13, 2024, update for SharePoint Server Subscription Edition (KB5002629) and then re-run SharePoint server subscription edition configuration wizard. This solves a lot of problems that arise by accident.
