Method to Upgrade Windows 11 24H2 from Windows 11 23H2

I would upgrade the PC Windows 11 24H2 from Windows 11 23H2.

Since I know that this is no any "enablement package" for version upgrade, an know that I can detect the upgrade from Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), However, may PC cannot get the upgrade from WSUS or Internet directly.

May I know what the problem?

Beside, the "Windows Server Update Services (including Configuration Manager)" is mentioned, I do not know what is Configuration Manager and do not know it is included in WSUS or not.

Is it mean that System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) is required for upgrade instead of WSUS only? Seem we are using basic WSUS only.

If yes, may I know the System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) is free license or cost license? And is it related to Cloud Service?

WSUS with or without ConfigMgr will upgrade Windows 11 23H2 to 24H2 without issue. I've already got my test systems already upgraded through WSUS without ConfigMgr. If you're having issues - See part 3 of my blog series on How to Setup, Manage, and Maintain WSUS:

I am no idea the reason the client cannot upgrade to 24H2 though.

-My testing PC version (Win 11 23H2 (OS22631.4317))

-WSUS OS (Windows Server 2019 (OS 17763.6293)) & Update Service version (10.0.17763.5830).

-"Upgrades" Classifications enabled.

However,

-Many "Windows 11 24H2" choice in Products I do not know enable which one.

Do not know the KB number to assign for upgrade 24H2.

The upgrade does not have a KB number. The upgrade is part of the Upgrades category and is named "Windows 11, version 24H2 x64 2024-10B"

If you follow my guide, part 2 has the Upgrades view so that you can easily find upgrades and scope that to NEEDED so you can see what upgrades your machines need. Alternatively, if you find it through the Approvals process (Part 6), your computers would tell you what updates they need, including upgrades.

After approved the "Windows 11, version 24H2 x64 2024-10B" to my testing desktop PC and confirmed the files has been downloaded and synchronize succeeded. However, the testing Desktop PC also still cannot get upgrade. On the another hand, I haven another testing Notebook still cannot get upgrade from Microsoft directly (Internet).

After checked and changed Local policy (set target version to 24H2), the testing notebook can get 24H2 update now, however, the testing PC is still cannot get upgrade even changed local policy.

I have try to compare both, I found that one KB5036212 installed in Notebook. but it is not installed in desktop PC. I have try to approve this KB in WSUS but this KB cannot be searched. Checked (Classification: Updates & Supported products: Windows 11). I do not is is related or not. But I know some thing my be the dependency for upgrade 24H2.

I have approved the update to my testing PC (under one computer group). And confirmed the file has been downloaded and synchronize succeeded. However, it is still no any update after I run the windows update in my testing PC. Is it any dependency by other update patch or Windows configuration by PC.

On the another hand, I have another notebook (Windows 11 23H2) which is configured to get update from Microsoft directly (Internet). the notebook is also cannot upgrade to 24H2 automatically.

You're totally missing the point. If the upgrade is not considered NEEDED, nothing will ever happen at the client. Approving an upgrade the client doesn't think it needs will only download the upgrade to the WSUS server, wasting space because no client needs it.

Also - confirm that the HARDWARE requirements on this system meet the requirements for Windows 11. If the TPM is less than 2.0 or the processor is less than 8th Generation, this computer will not upgrade from WSUS - even if Windows 11 23H2 is installed.

So you are setting WuFB policies and expecting WSUS to uphold them? It doesn't.

You are right. I just checked the testing desktop PC status in WSUS server. There are 43 "Updates needed" and all of them are "Windows Malicious Software Removal Tools" & "Microsoft Edge" updates. No any "needed" updated related to Windows version update. It means that my testing desktop PC does not need the 24H2 upgrade.

Base on above, it should be some thing problem in testing desktop PC side instead of WSUS. Since I have no idea any configuration in PC side of this problem. just try to compare the configuration with the successful testing notebook. The configuration of testing desktop PC & notebook does not same. The testing Desktop PC is joined customer domain and applied customer configuration. The testing notebook is the basic installation without joined domain (both are Windows 11 23H2).

The Hardware is meet the Windows 11 24H2 requirement.

I am no idea of "WuFB policies". The Local Policy Configuration is just searched from internet only.

If you have all of those as needed, you are not performing the recommended WSUS Maintenance - https://www.ajtek.ca/wsus/how-to-setup-manage-and-maintain-wsus-part-8-wsus-server-maintenance/ - Including but not limited to running the Server Cleanup Wizard (SCW), declining superseded updates, running the SQL Indexing script, etc.?

I would highly suggest reading the entire 8 part guide and other articles on the site.

I did all that it being suggested, but still, I don't have the update,

The point is this: I really hate to have surprise updates when I have a load of work, so I need to pause when am gonna have a work load, but sometimes I forget and happens that, and guess what? knock, knock, a new update is avail, and it keeps popping-up and if happens that I update, the software I have installed begins to have problems, so I need to spend time to fix those issues, must of the times related with the software, other times the configuration changes, or so.

That's why I 'd rather prefer to prevent those issues and BEFORE I BEGIN A NEW PROJECT, I research if there is a half-year update for at least 1 month after the release and is available everywhere, and try to update, but even it is everywhere else avail, it's not in my PC!.

The updates in windows is always an issue, hope you give more clear and easy ways to install new updates, in the old times we usually didn't have these issues and it was easier to fix it.

Hope you can fix this and less complicated, let's say, one day. I hope.
