I just configured Windows 2019 Server Standard edition for our 4 employee company all through video tutorials that I found online. We bought 5 per device CAL's. We will not be accessing the server remotely and will only be accessed during company hours and only in the company. I have been researching how I can find out if the CAL has already been activated for one computer that I added to the domain but I cannot find out where I can see this information. My research online tells me that I have to install RDS and then go to the Remote Desktop Licensing Manager and from there I can see the licenses but we will not be accessing the server remotely and i do not know if I have to install this feature. What I have read about Remote Desktop Services is that if you install it, you have to buy a license to use it.

Can someone please guide me and answer the following questions:

1) I added 1 computer to the domain and I can see it logged in on Computers in Active Directory Users and Computers. Since it is there, does that mean that it already took up one of the CAL licenses or do I need to activate it and how?

2) When I bought the server, I assumed that the CAL's were automatically added to the server and when one computer signs in, that the server would automatically assign one of the CAL's to each computer. If this is not the case, how do I manually and where do I input the CAL's to the server and how do I assign them to each computer?

3) Do I have to install RDS just to see the CAL's?

4) We are going to use an inventory program through the server, in order for each pc to access this program, what do I need to do so that all 4 pc's can connect to the server at the same time and use this program? The way I did it to view files but not the inventory program because we do not have the program yet, was to log into the server on that one pc that I connected and go to file explorer and then choose (THIS PC) from there I right clicked on an empty space on the right side and chose (ADD A NETWORK LOCATION) and that is how I was able to view the files from the server. Is that how it is done to access files and programs from the server?

I am a newbie who knows nothing about setting up a server and everything that I have done so far, was done by following video tutorials that I found on the internet. Any help I will greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much in advance.

When I bought the server, I assumed that the CAL's were automatically added to the server

Windows Cals are just a piece of paper, there's nothing to install. Just hang on to the documentation for record keeping and in case of audit.

We are going to use an inventory program through the server, in order for each pc to access this program, what do I need to do so that all 4 pc's can connect to the server at the same time and use this program?

This sounds like you're planning to add the RDS role? If so you can follow along here.

Do I need to install RDS in order to access any program/application if we are just going to access the server locally and not remotely

    No, you would not.
